Driven by compassion: A transportation provider’s path to a kidney donation

Christine DeCosta

Every day in healthcare, there are stories of good unfolding around us. A new research discovery that cures a disease. A patient’s miraculous healing from a chronic illness. A selfless human act that saves another life. These stories are crucial to share as they encourage hope and positivity, and perhaps a nudge to leave our world a better place. This is the story of Christine—a woman’s journey as a compassionate Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) driver that led her down a path to donate an organ.

Discovering compassion

Christine's journey to becoming a kidney donor didn't unfold with a sudden epiphany. Instead, it was a gradual awakening driven by her caring nature and desire to create a positive impact. "About 25 years ago, I learned about people donating their kidneys, and I was intrigued," she recalled. "But the timing wasn't quite right for me to embark on the procedure."

It wasn't until Christine joined the team at Modivcare in February 2022 that the true significance of organ donation became clear to her. Assigned the task of driving members to their dialysis appointments, she found herself immersed in their world—bearing witness to their struggles, their resilience, and the profound impact of chronic kidney disease.

"I drove many members to their dialysis appointments, and I found myself heartbroken from their suffering," Christine confided. "It was then that I realized how important a kidney transplant could be to so many people."

Answering the call

"I knew I had to do something," she explained. "I couldn't stand by and watch others suffer when I had the opportunity to make a difference."

Driven by a sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to compassion, Christine took the courageous step of reaching out to the Maine Transplant Center in May 2023 to initiate the process of donating her kidney.

In December 2023, Christine underwent the life-changing procedure, donating her kidney to a stranger with the guidance of her profound compassion for those in need.

Dedication beyond expectation

Yet, Christine’s journey extends beyond a single act. Long before she became a kidney donor, she had already won the admiration of her colleagues at Modivcare, earning recognition as Driver of the Month in April and October 2023—a testament to her professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

"Christine is always punctual, professional, and courteous," her colleagues remarked. "She maintains a caring attitude and always gives outstanding customer service to our members. We are proud to have her on our team."

A satisfying mission

For Christine, her role is more than just a job—it's a calling driven by a passion to serve and uplift others. "It's extremely satisfying," she noted. "Many I transport would struggle without Modivcare. It's vital work."

Modivcare is proud to have teammates, like Christine, who embody our values of compassion and
service. In a world of uncertainty, Christine's example encourages us to embrace empathy and make a positive difference.
